It seems a little bit inappropriate that sounds quite as assuredly layed-back and tropically lush as those created by Copasetics could hail from our frosty little chunk of the Northern hemisphere. Formed in 2009 out of a desire to play Jimmy Cliff and Maytals covers, this band now crafts chilled out original songs that occupy a stylistic territory somewhere between dub-reggae and ska-punk. Their music is characterized by classically reggae offbeat guitars, meandering brass and shuffling rhythms and all of the above are done extremely well, but I have to say that what sets Copasetics apart is their immense talent for writing vocal harmonies. ‘You’re humming The Tune’ is a feast of choral creativity and lead vocalist Ben’s ever-so-slightly raspy voice is incredibly easy on the ear throughout.
There’s a real wealth of ideas and influences at work here and as different instruments take prominence throughout Copasetics’ songs, these disparate inspirations reveal themselves, from New Orleans funeral march brass to rude boy rhythms straight out of The Specials’ stylebook. At times some of the harmonies these guys employ are reminiscent of The Red Hot Chili Peppers (in the good old days) and, dare I say it, No Doubt. To clarify, I love No Doubt and can only apologise to anybody I’ve upset through making that comparison. I suppose what I’m getting at is that Copasetics are incredibly good at making hyper-melodic pop music with a hint of punk ethos thrown in for good measure. If you like listening to upbeat music with an honest heart this band is likely to be exactly your kind of thing. Their next gig in York is a headliner at The Duchess on Friday the 13th of April.
