Today’s local good cause in need of volunteer support is Epilepsy Action, who aim to build a brighter future for people living with epilepsy.
Over 600,000 people are living with epilepsy in the UK today, including 40,466 across Yorkshire. That figure increases daily as the serious neurological condition can strike anybody, at any time in their life, with 87 new people diagnosed every day.
With the right advice some will be able to control their seizures with drugs, but most will live with seizures and the impact epilepsy has on their health, relationships, work and everyone around them for the rest of their life. Epilepsy Action support people with epilepsy through local branches, telephone and email helplines, and an army of community volunteers.
In York, they have a number of pressing volunteer support and fundraising positions available:
Wonga Walk Coordinator
Want to step out to help the 600,000 people living with epilepsy in the UK today? We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to organise a sponsored Wonga Walk in the York area.
Wonga Walks can take place at any time throughout the year, and your walk can be as big or a small as you like. You can organise a long distance hike in the countryside, a sponsored dog walk, an urban midnight walk, or even a tots toddle. Any funds you raise will be vital in helping us continue to support people living with epilepsy.
Your brand new local Community Fundraiser will provide advice, support, and ideas to make your event a success, and as the organiser you will receive a fundraising pack that includes everything you need to get you on your way.
Community Fundraising Coordinator
Do you have a passion for events and your local community? We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to start a fundraising group in the York area.
Starting your own group isn’t as scary as it sounds! As the group founder you’ll need to bring together a group of fundraisers. These can be your friends, family and colleagues. So it might be much simpler than you think!
You will then organise the group to get together – either in person, by phone or over the internet – to discuss ideas and make plans for events of your choosing. It could be gigs, sponsored walks, Summer fetes, fashion shows, pamper nights, golf days… the list is endless!
Collection and Events Support Volunteer
We’re looking for people or groups who can give us a few hours of their time to support our events and collections in York. This could a bucket collection in a supermarket or a football stadium, helping at a tea party, or marshaling at a sponsored walk.
You can tell us when you would like to volunteer, and when we have something happening in your area we’ll get in touch and invite you along. We generally ask you to join us for three hours at a time, but there’s no obligation to say yes. This is an easy, stress-free way to get involved with fundraising!
You can pledge your support or simply find out more information by clicking the “pledge here” button at the right of this article. Let us know how you get on!
