Now in its seventh year, the Illuminating York Festival is returning this coming Autumn, heading to the Castle Museum from October 26th to 29th, the weekend of half term. A large scale video mapping projection will provide a colourful array of lights onto the 18th century building, the Eye of York, which was formerly a women’s prison. A resounding success in the past, this year’s Illuminating Festival is not to be missed.
For anyone wondering, Video Projection Mapping is the projection of 3D motion graphics in real-time onto the surface of a building or structure. The result is aesthetically stunning as the exterior of the building comes alive with animated forms. The centre-piece of the coming festival is ‘Envisions’ by GaiaNova and United VJs, an original artistic creation inspired by the former life of the Eye of York and of York’s intriguing and diverse history. A specially developed soundtrack will feature ancestral whispers and echoes from the people of York as viewers are taken on a visual journey.
Alongside ‘Evisions’ will run ‘Contours’ by Karen Monid, a music-centred piece seeking to rediscover Viking and Saxon cultural heritage and the places across the Globe in which it thrived. The music will be based around poetry; has been composed from seven languages and will evoke natural sounds bringing fragments of a lost world alive. The venue for ‘Contours’ is yet to be confirmed.
City centre bars, restaurants and cafes, among others will be getting involved with the Illuminating York Festival offering special offers and discounts. Make sure you don’t miss out on what promises to be one of York’s most spectacular events of the season, bringing together cutting edge technology to create fantastic lighting displays and a whole host of fringe events in the city.
