A York-born man who aspired to lick all of the Anglican Cathedrals in England has completed his biblical task.
Lawrence Edmonds, a former Jorvik Viking Centre employee, was challenged to visit every Anglican cathedral across the country and lick each one. Forty-three buildings in total were graced with his presence. The idea, which started out as a bet administered by friends, has tied up thirteen months of tongue time and has had Edmonds sending tongues wagging from Winchester to Wakefield. The challenge started at Norwich Cathedral, which, Edmonds expressed in a YouTube interview, also had the best-tasting stonework.
The self-confessed medieval geek has also said that it’s not just about winning the bet, but appreciating the buildings around the country during the process. After having a taste of them all, Edmonds has cemented his belief that Durham is his most favourite cathedral. Edmonds paid lip service to his hometown by completing his tour of England at York Minster, the only place to start for any budding cathedral-lickers in York.
We praise twenty-six year old Lawrence for taking on this bet and for religiously touring the country for over a year to complete the endeavour without bricking it.
Edmonds seems to have developed a taste for cathedral-licking, and should not need to altar his method for the next part of his pilgrimage which will take him to the cathedrals of Scotland and Wales. We think he’ll have it licked in no time.
Let’s hope he finishes soon so he can finally nip this task in the taste-buds.
