The Friends of York Walls are offering you the opportunity to sponsor a stone in York’s historic city walls as a fundraising initiative to raise money for the restoration of the Fishergate Postern Tower.

Local business and members of the public are invited to sponsor a stone and be part of the history of York as you will be allocated an individual and identifiable stone, or stones,on the outside face of Fishergate Postern Tower. Recorded in a ‘Book of Sponsors’ together with a message from yourself, the record will eventually be on display within the tower when the ultimate aim of reopening the monument is achieved.

Whether as a gift or for yourself this is a great opportunity to help restore part of York’s history and to get your name attached to part of this grand history, even if it’s only in a small way.

Postern Tower  which is located near the junction of Piccadilly and Fishergate, originally stood on the bank of the Foss and was built between 1504 and 1507, and replaced an earlier tower on the site called Talkan Tower built in 1440.

The tower gets its name from the remains of a small postern gate – the posternam iuxta Skarletpit, meaning the postern next to the Scarlet Pit. In 1489 the gateway was blocked.

Except for changes to the roof the tower has changed little in 500 years, with the only significant change being the addition of the tiled roof that can be seen today.

The ultimate aim of the sponsor a stone campaign will be to reopen the tower to the public and there are plans to host a “Tower Open Day” over the York Residents Festival weekend of Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th January 2012.
