Bonfire Night in York – What’s On

It’s almost that time of year again when we throw the effigies on the pyre of York’s infamous gunpowder plotter, Guy Fawkes, who tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament on 5 November, 1605. Bite into toffee apples and watch the fireworks sparkle and crackle as they boom and take up the sky, as Bonfire Night is almost upon us. We’ve compiled a list of the best events going on in York this year to remember, remember the fifth of November.

Rat Race Gunpowder Plot and Fireworks Festival

5 November at York Knavesmire

The world’s first 5km run set to pyrotechnics is coming to York with the Gun Powderplod built by York-based Rat Race Adventure Sports. Runners will be entertained by fire installations and performers on each kilometre they run.

If you don’t want to work up a sweat then you can sit back and enjoy the fireworks festival. There will be music on two stages and the headliners are Reverend and the Makers.

 York Maze Fireworks Spectacular

5 November at York Maze

This year’s theme is the “Best of British” following the success of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympics. The firework spectacular is choreographed and the songs have been chosen by Minster FM Listeners. There will celebrations of the Best of British music, so expect rousing anthems and lots of red, white and blue.

The show runs from 4.30 to 10.30pm. Tickets are £12 to £35 before 31 October and £14 to £40 afterwards.

Bonfire & Firework Spectacular!

3 November at The Poppleton Centre

There will be a huge bonfire, plenty of fireworks, hot food and a hog roast at the Poppleton Centre this year.

Tickets are £6 for adults, chilren 5 to 16 £3 and under fives go free, and are available from the coffee house at thre Popppletonm centre, The Poppleton Centre bar, Cardland and Upper Poppleton Post office. Gates open at 5pm with the bonfire lit at 7.00 and fireworks at 7.15

Kaboom! 

4 November at Rawcliffe Country Park

Kaboom! wanted to bring fireworks back to York after they disappeared from the event calendar in 1996. Their firework display is fully choreographed with lighting and special FX to a James Bond themed music which has been specially

There will be a funfair with dodgems, waltzers and side-stalls, as well as special guests and celebrities and their headline act is X Factor finalist Marcus Collins.

Kamboom! starts at 4pm and goes through to 10pm.

If you live in the YO30 area tickets are £7.50 for adults, £5 for children from 4 – 16 are £3, under threes go free, premium tickets are £40 and travel tickets are only £10 for adults, £7.50 for children and under threes go free. Advanced tickets only.

The Marcia Inn

7 November at Marcia Inn in Bishopthorpe

Join The Marcia Inn for their for their annual Bonfire Night celebrations with their large burning pyre and fireworks display at 7pm. There will be a BBQ, hot meat and potato pies, toffee apples and flapjacks.

Make sure you get there early as it does get very busy.
