It’s that time of year again for Pudsey the bear, Terry Wogan and the marathon TV show on BBC One and Two for the Children in Need Appeal. With the first appeal having been broadcast on BBC radio in 1972, the first televised appeal occurred in 1995. Following on from the success of this approach, the telethon format which we have come to expect each November started in it’s current format on BBC 1 in 1980. Joining the legendary host Terry Wogan, who has been the long term face of the show, the iconic mascot, Pudsey, joined the appeal in 1985. Hosting the show alongside Terry Wogan this year are Alesha Dixon, Tess Daily and Fearne Cotton.
Since its beginnings, the appeal has reached the hearts of the public, who have generously helped to raise over £600 million. Every penny raised through the show goes towards making a difference to the lives of children throughout the UK. Children in Need promotes safe, happy, and secure childhoods which allow children the chance to reach their full potentials.
To assist this the appeal provides grants to over 2,000 voluntary projects, groups and charities in the UK which focus on children and young people who are disadvantaged. The appeal works towards tackling issues such as poverty, homelessness, illness, abuse, neglect, learning difficulties, disabilities, and behavioural and psychological disorders on a local and national level.
On tonight’s show, kick starting on BBC 1 at 7.30pm, and continuing on BBC 2 from 10pm, celebrities will be providing entertainment, and generally making fools of themselves to encourage people across the country to donate their money.
Furthermore there will be special editions of Doctor Who, The One Show, Strictly Come Dancing, QI, Mastermind, Blue Peter, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, and many others. There will also be appearances by One Direction, the BBC newsreaders, the Outnumbered kids, Dragon’s Den with Lord Alan Sugar, Olly Murs, Ed Sheeran and many more.
The positive impact Children in Need has across the nation is evident locally. North Yorkshire project, InterActive, received a £20,000 grant from Children In Need this month. The project provides play and activity schemes for able bodied and disabled children, with the grant going towards a weekend activity programme for children up to 17 years old. The grant pays for the salaries of the five staff needed to run the scheme, allowing it to continue.
To raise funds for the appeal, the Christmas Adventure in Stockeld Park is hosting a Children in Need Christmas Bauble 2011 fundraiser. As the Christmas lights are being witched on, baubles are available to buy to hang on the Children in Need Appeal Christmas tree. There will also be an Ice Skating Disco, with £2 from all tickets going towards Children In Need.
With a multitude of fundraising ideas available, such as cake baking, sponsorships, fancy dress, quiz nights, karaoke nights, raffles and auctions, and sports tournaments, get in touch and let us know what you are doing to raise funds for Children in Need!
