A dairy free diet is something that is growing increasingly common in England today; whether a result of lactose intolerance, vegan-ism or a general dislike for dairy products it has become more and more prevalent in society.

Unlike their “Gluten Free” counterparts, dairy free people are largely under-catered for. Therefore I have made it my mission to hunt high and low for those places that offer a dairy free diet.

My first instalment is crying out to those with a sweet tooth. So, here it is, my guide to eating dairy free cake and desserts within the city:

1. El Piano (Grape Lane)

Absolutely everything on the menu here is dairy free. There is no chance of contamination and they are a lactose free dream. They have an extensive savoury (vegan and gluten free) menu but their crème de la crème is their dessert menu. They offer an amazing carrot cake, sticky toffee pudding and many other desserts that most dairy free people had forgotten existed.

2.Goji (Goodramgate)

Goji largely cater for vegetarians. They also have a fine selection of daily cakes. Although not all dairy free it is worth asking which ones you can have. I particularly recommend their strudel.

3.The Good Food Shop (Bishopthorpe Rd)

Although their cakes are generally laden with butter it is worth looking in the frozen cabinet here. They have a fine selection of Dairy Free Ice creams. My personal favourite is Goji’s Coconut offering.

4.Betty’s

Although you can’t really over indulge here there are a few choice items to soften the blow. They offer a wonderful, gooey macaroon and I am a massive fan of their home-made pikelets (with Strawberry Jam).

Starbucks/Nero/Costa and all other big chains also offer a dairy free option on their menu. Although normally a brownie they can taste great.
