From the 21st of January 2012 David Hockney’s recent series of works depicting the East Yorkshire landscapes amidst which he lives are exhibiting at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. This is the first exhibition featuring this new series of images and many of the large scale pieces were designed especially for the galleries; they will be shown alongside related drawings and film.
‘David Hockney RA: A Bigger Picture’ spans over 50 years and demonstrates his preoccupation and dedication into perfecting the depiction of landscapes. It is this journey that has seen Hockney forge forward in using technology; this includes his infamous use of Polaroid, photocopiers, and more recently his iPhone and iPad. This technological experimentation will be evident in the exhibition, which is set to include a display of his iPad drawings and a series of new films produced using 18 cameras, these images will be displayed on multiple screens and which will offer visitors a visual journey through the eyes of the artist.
The new work in the series date from 2005 and promise to “captures the beauty of the changing seasons, the cycle of growth and the journey that Hockney has taken through his beloved landscapes in Yorkshire.”
The exhibition will include “The Bigger Trees Near Warter” which many of you will have been lucky enough to have seen in York Art Gallery last year.
“A Bigger Picture” is on until April 2012.

I am lucky to be living in the same town as David Hockney and know the area around Bridlington very well in which he has painted many of the artworks on show at the Royal Academy. The location of many of these paintings are documented in the website at http://www.yocc.co.uk with places through out the scenic Yorkshire Wolds.
