Symbolising a growing culture of tolerance and open-ness in our city, for the first time ever the streets of York are set to play host to a Gay Pride march. It’s a little ridiculous that it’s taken us 800 years to get to this point, but the marchers look set to make up for lost time with a day of activism and entertainment spanning the city on a broad scale. The march is set to launch a day of events on Saturday 21st July, setting off from York Minster (which was recently the scene of gay rights protests – read more about that here. around lunchtime, and then processing through the streets all the way to Bustardthorpe Field where a bevy of terrifically camp acts including X-factor star Craig Colton and lesbian comic Rosie Wilby are set to entertain the crowds.
It’s set to be a truly inclusive day of fun, and all are invited, straight, gay, transgender, animal, vegetable and mineral alike. Funded by York-based transport giant Northern Rail, York Northern Pride 2012 promises high-quality entertainment and mass participation.
