The month of October has been officially dedicated to the practice of drawing in the form of a global creative event known as The Big Draw. It will be hosted by studios and Art institutions across the country and among those playing their part for York will be Bar Lane Studios. They will be encouraging local residents of all ages to unleash thier creative side and get involved in this hugely popular and one of a kind collaborative project

Originally set up to break down the barriers of drawing and the creative arts for the public, this event has been supported by a number of highly influencial partons, who are themselves professionals in the creative field. The involvement of creative giants such as Quentin Blake CBE, Lord Foster of Thames Bank and David Hockney CH has ensured that the scheme appeals to those interested in aspects of the whole spectrum of ‘The Arts’ from illustration to architecture to printmaking.

All bases are covered and furthermore, new ones are welcomed – the beauty of the event is that there are absolutely no limits your creativity.

As a sister project of The Campaign For Drawing charity, its existance proves that the personal act of drawing can be contextualised socially to create a positive impact on the way we view the current cultural climate. This creates a mirrored impression of the beliefs of John Ruskin (the main inspriational figure for the scheme) whose written and art works helped to influence an understanding of drawing as an essential tool in the Victorian cultural scene.

The Campaign for Drawing continues to prommote this view, and has ultimately achieved it’s aim – to encourage drawing practice as a powerful creative tool both in the process of progession and as a key player in the act of communication.
The temptation to discover a potential inner artist has proved too much to resist for many who have already taken part in the event, as each year The Big Draw recieves more interest than the one before and concequently 2012 is set to be the most successful yet.

Our theme this year is entitled ‘2012 in Lines’ which provides a concept broad enough to be interpreted by any style, method and approach. Do you have an idea? Would you like your artwork, illustration or design to feature in the biggest drawing event of the year? Then grab your pencils, paintbrushes and sketchbooks, go to Bar Lane Studios from 5pm on Friday 12th October – 5pm Staurday 13th October and take part.
