“There’s a space between what happens to us and how we react to it. That space holds the key to happiness: the ability to choose our response”

Mark Williamson
Director, Action for Happiness

Having reported on the great work being done by Action for Happiness at the beginning of the year, 2012 is set to be another busy year for the well being and happiness focused movement.

18,500 people became members of the cause last year, 1,600 people attended Action for Happiness Events, and 120 countries are now represented by Action for Happiness members. Highlights from last year include 10 Keys to a Happier Living, the spread of local groups across the country, positive responses to the Happiness in Schools initiative, and the Happiness at Work event.

Working towards building a happier society, Action for Happiness have a multitude of things planned to create a generally happier society, and help increase the amount of smiles, happy people and happy work places in the year ahead.

On February the 11th, World Happy Day will be taking place.  Screenings of the film Happy will be happening across the country, and all over the world. Tickets will be priced either at a donation set by the individual purchasing the ticket (increasing accessibility to screenings) or at a set donation price of £15.  They invited people to host their own screenings of the film (registration has now closed) and the nearest open screening will be taking place in Huddersfield.

EU Council president Herman Van Rompuy recently called for all world leaders to make issues around well being their priority for 2012, and gave his support to Action for Happiness. He stated, “I am very happy to give my support to the worldwide activity of Lord Richard Layard (www.actionforhappiness.org), which offers all of us starting-points for happiness. It is an international movement for positive social change. Thousands of men and women in more than a hundred countries are committed to it”.

At the end of March, Happiness Weekend will be taking place, with five free places available exclusively to Action for Happiness members. Places are being offered by Professor Neil Frude at The Happiness Consultancy. The weekend involves a practical course which teaches participants how to develop their ways of thinking, actions and relationships to help make their lives become happier.

Highlighting just a few of the events taking place over the next twelve months, the Action for Happiness website, and the YorKind website have more information, ideas, and guidance to help to make your 2012 a happy one.
