Graduate jobs market in York decreases

A new report by the Higher Education Careers Service Unit has revealed graduate jobs in York have decreased from last year.

The database reveals 400 graduates have secured full graduate level jobs in York which is down from 460 in 2010.  Overall 800 graduates in the city went into jobs which are down from 890 in 2010.

The UK report from the Higher Education Careers Service Unit (Hecsu) and Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services provides a detailed look at the paths taken six months after graduation – based on the graduates leaving university in 2011.

Deputy research director, Charlie Ball, said that the main jobs that graduates in the city are picking up are mainly in bar work and retail. Overall this reflects the trend with 15% of graduates in the UK going into this area. However for full level graduate jobs in York, the main area is either office jobs or classroom assistants.

‘Attractive destination’

Ball added that York for a small city was an attractive destination for graduates and that a majority of students who studied at the universities had a desire to stay in the city following the completion of their undergraduate education.

He concluded that the most common way for people in city to get a job are through web, personal contacts and going back to previous employers.

‘North Yorkshire’ 

In North Yorkshire overall, the figures are slightly better with 59% of graduates at full level compared to York at 47%. The trend for North Yorkshire overall is deemed to be better for marketing and management jobs.

Overall in Yorkshire as stated by ITV, 1 in 13 graduates are going to work in Yorkshire with a percentage of 7.5% overall. This is just behind the West Midlands with 7.7% which includes Birmingham as the most popular destination for graduates outside London.
