You may have been lucky enough to have seen David Hockey’s exhibition piece ‘Bigger Trees Near Warter’ as it coated the walls of York Art Galley last February – June, 2011. Well now the successful exhibition ‘A Bigger Picture’ has bagged itself a South Bank award nomination. Born in Bradford West Yorkshire, Hockney is a local man whose award nominated exhibition spans a 50 year period exploring his fascination with the depiction of landscape. Hockey’s paintings consist of many of Yorkshire’s own landscapes which nurtured and surrounded the young Hockney as he developed into the artist he is today. The painting ‘Bigger Trees Near Warter’, that came to York on loan from Tate, is the largest painting in the exhibition and the largest painting Hockney has ever produced, measuring 40 x 15 feet (12 x 4 metres). The exhibition also includes older landscape works, as well as drawings and even film. His exhibition stands up against another local Yorkshire architecture The Hepworth in Wakefield created by David Chipperfield, as well as Grayson Perry’s piece ‘The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman’ in the visual art category.
Lord Melvyn Bragg (ex host of The South Bank Show) will host the awards ceremony which will take place at the Dorchester hotel in London, and will be broadcast on the Sky Arts digital channel at 21.00 on the 1 May 2012.
