The climax to the celebration of the arrival of the Olympic Torch in York will be marked with a concert at the Knavesmire featuring Katy B gracing the Cola-Cola stage. Katy will be joined on 19 June by former Blue Peter presenter Andy Akinwolere and African drumming groups Umbu and Calabash, as well as the gospel sounds of the University of York’s choir Zamar.
The celebration will be open to all, unticketed and people who want to join the celebration and throw themselves into the sporting spirit are invited to tell City of York Council that they’re coming to the party by simply clicking here and following the link.
Councillor Sonja Crisp, City of York Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for Leisure, Culture and Social Inclusion said, “It’s a fantastic opportunity to bring thousands of people together to share the excitement of the London 2012 Games and to enjoy a variety of entertainment organised by City of York Council with LOCOG and the three Presenting Partners of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay – Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung.”
Speaking about the York celebrations Katy B, who has recorded a song with producer Mark Ronson, to mark the Olympic Games said, “London 2012 is such a huge moment for the UK and I can’t wait to help spread the excitement in York as the Olympic Torch makes its historic journey around the country. I’m especially looking forward to performing Anywhere in the World, the song for the Coca-Cola Olympic Games campaign that I’ve recorded with Mark Ronson.”
The celebration will get set from 11:00 with the Sporting Giants Games at Bustardthorpe – a sports day for some 30, four-metre high biomechanical puppets made by 23 York primary schools. From 14:00 at the Racecourse there will be sports demonstrations and interactive stands offering tasters of activities including basketball, cheer-leading, table tennis and equestrian sports.
From 17:00, staged spectaculars and interactive presentations by the Presenting Partners will kick off. Each will provide 20 minutes of exciting and stimulating entertainment including Coca-Cola showcasing exciting up-and-coming live music acts, Lloyds TSB bringing stunning acrobatic performances to the site and Samsung staging hi-tech dance performances.
Prior to and during the show, the audience can participate in a number of activities including having your photograph taken with the London 2012 Torch and other Olympic-related activities.
At 18:50 the Olympic Torch will complete the final leg of the day’s journey to the stage on horseback, and will be used to light a celebration cauldron.
