Lucian Freud’s final painting completed before his death in July 2011 is to be shown publically in London’s National Portrait Gallery in February 2012.
“Portrait of the Hound 2011″ is a painting of Freud’s assistant David Dawson naked alongside his dog Eli. Freud was one of the most influential artists of the last century and arguably the greatest of his generation. The exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery will feature over 100 works from museums and private collections, including previously unseen works.
The inclusion of the last painting by Freud will be a huge draw for fans of Freud, eager to see his final work. The portraits of lovers, family and friends, give an insight into the world of the great artist and “demonstrate the psychological drama and unrelenting observational intensity of his work.”
Grandson of the father of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud, Lucian was born in Berlin in December 1922, and moved to England with his family in 1933, where after studying art he went onto become one of our greatest artists, until his death at the age of 88 last year.
I paint people’, Freud has said, ‘not because of what they are like, not exactly in spite of what they are like, but how they happen to be’.
The exhibition, Lucian Freud Portraits runs from 9 February through to 27 May, 2012.
