Every seat was filled for KT Tunstall in the Grand Opera House, and once she started performing I began to understand why.

With her critical acclaim and music featuring on various film soundtracks, you wouldn’t expect the 2005 Mercury music prize nominee to be so down-to-earth. However, KT engages with the crowd and provides a humorous and friendly backdrop to her set, providing anecdotes and jesting with audience members.

The most unique element of her performance is her creative use of the loop pedal. KT records the backing tracks live on the stage, giving the music a raw and ‘thrown together’ quality. This technique alone would make me recommend seeing KT live to a friend.

She performed a variety of songs, including many from her first album ‘Eye to the Telescope’. Her raspy, Scottish accent transcends well into the singing; her vocal performance was exceptional.

After a brief break KT returned for an encore, performing her hit “Suddenly I See”, encouraging the audience to get on their feet and as KT phrased it: ‘act like it’s a Saturday night.’ I left the theatre feeling upbeat (and rather jealous of her talent!)
