On Friday the 11th of November, York City Council and Blackpool Borough Council announced a new partnership on a range of projects. The alliance will mutually benefit both cities financially and on a cultural level.
A notable advantage for York will be the ‘lending’ of equipment and industry expertise from Blackpool Illuminations in the 2012 Illuminating York Festival.
York is famed for its various top class markets offering continental produce, vintage items and antiques. These come in addition to the popular Made in Yorkshire, Fashion City York and the Food and Drink Festivals. In return for help with Illuminating York, Blackpool will benefit from a share in these famed markets. These new events are planned to be based in Blackpool’s St John’s Square.
The councils are planning to cross promote between the two cities, offering joint deals and attractions to visitors. The direct train service between York and Blackpool will provide a city-to-city connection, allowing visitors to create a weekend trip between the two.
The collaboration comes at an exciting time for York, with the impending York 800 Festival. 2012 also marks a century of the Blackpool Illuminations. The decision is welcome news to both residents and visitors, with both cities benefiting from the knowledge and experience of the other.
The alliance will reduce running costs of festivals, in addition to boosting the revenue and visitor numbers of current events.

Sounds like a good idea. But if they're planning on promoting the train journey from York-Blackpool they'll need to improve it a lot! 3 hours without refreshments and often broken/blocked toilets isn't as fun as it sounds! A 2 hour car journey is better :)
