Lee Alexander McQueen was inevitably one of the most successful and unbeaten British designers, with a string of awards under his belt, including International designer of 2003. He also gained 4 British Designer of the Year awards, one of which was a double accomplishment, as he was one of the youngest designers to achieve such an honour. His career blossomed when he received a master’s degree in fashion design, and took his middle name for the use in his label – ‘Alexander’ McQueen, which was to be used throughout his career.

McQueen was known for his beautiful, bespoke tailoring and designs, using the luxury combination of delicate but durable fabrics. He was acknowledged for his lavish but influential runways, expressing raw energy and eccentricity. He surprised audiences with technology innovations and become known for using skulls in his work, and also became one of the first designers to use Indian models in his London shows.

Sadly, McQueen passed away on February 11th 2010, rumoured to have been struggling with unhappiness, especially after recent loss of his mother. It was a devastating loss, especially to the fashion world, though McQueen’s long-term assistant Sarah Burton, was named as the creative director of Alexander McQueen, and continues some striking collections today.

Sarah recently won Harper’s Bazaar: ‘Designer of the Year.’

We particularly love the new S/S’12 collection which can be viewed here.
