With Awards Season upon us, from the Golden Globes to the Oscars, One&Other have been looking at the recently released BAFTA nominations, debating the winners and losers ahead of the ceremony on 12th February.
Silent film The Artist leads the pack with 12 nominations, closely followed by Cold War espionage drama, Tinker Tailor Solider Spy, with 11 nominations (despite being ignored by most of the U.S. awards shortlists). This year will also see a BAFTA Fellowship being awarded to legendary director Martin Scorsese.
You can find the full list of nominations here.
When it comes to an awards ceremony, for any film fan, there are the likely winners, and then there are those that should win. Here are some of the predicted winners, and some of the should-be winners, of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards 2012:
Best Film
Who will win? The Artist seems the likely winner here, having picked up the Golden Globe for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy). That said, Alexander Payne’s The Descendants is also a worthy contender, winning the Golden Globe for Best Picture (Drama). At the BAFTAs, however, there can only be one winner – It’s going to be The Artist (or I’ll look rather silly).
Who should win? The Artist or The Descendants.
Outstanding British Film
Who will win? It seems likely that Tinker Tailor will get the nod, especially as it has been largely ignored by the U.S. Awards.
Who should win? Tinker Tailor would definitely make a worthy winner, although Steve McQueen’s daring, controversial sex-addiction drama, Shame, arguably deserves the nod just as much.
Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer
Who will win? Tyrannosaur is the stand-out here; an absolutely stunning directorial debut by Paddy Considine. It especially deserves the nod after Olivia Coleman was robbed of a Supporting Actress nomination.
Who should win? If not Tyrannosaur, then Richard Ayoade deserves the award for directing the most original British comedy for years, Submarine. Britain’s answer to Wes Anderson?
Director
Who will win? Michel Hazanavicius deserves to win for his film The Artist, and with the Leading Actor and Actress categories hotly contested, it seems likely that the silent film’s director will get a nod, rather than its stars. However, Scorsese’s Hugo is also a big contender, already winning the Golden Globe for Best Director.
Who should win? Personally, if anything other than Lynne Ramsay’s We Need to Talk About Kevin wins, I’ll be happy. The Artist, Drive, Hugo and Tinker Tailor are all fantastic films in their own right.
Leading Actor
Who will win? George Clooney’s performance in The Descendants has been hailed as the best of his career, and he won the Best Actor (Drama) award at the Golden Globes last Sunday. This one seems like it’s already in the bag.
Who should win? Clooney is certainly a worthy winner, as is Michael Fassbender for his performance in Shame. However, Gary Oldman’s pensive performance as Smiley in Tinker Tailor should not be forgotten amongst the other Hollywood heavyweights.
Leading Actress
Who will win? A difficult one to predict, but it seems the main competition is between Michelle Williams for her performance in My Week with Marilyn and Meryl Streep for her portrayal as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Both Actresses won a Golden Globe this year, and they seem set to compete at the Oscars too. For my money, Streep will get the nod.
Who should win? Maggie or Marilyn would make a worthy winner.
Supporting Actor
Who will win? Christopher Plummer has already earned a Golden Globe for his supporting role as Ewan McGregor’s terminally-ill elderly father in Beginners, but Jim Broadbent has also been turning heads for his role as Denis Thatcher in The Iron Lady.
Who should win? Broadbent deserves his third BAFTA win.
Supporting Actress
Who will win? Quite a tough call. Carey Mulligan deserves the award for her performance as a desperate young mother in Drive, but Octavia Spencer’s performance in The Help as a maid in the Civil Rights era is also fantastic, already earning her a Golden Globe.
Who should win? Olivia Coleman for her stunning, heart-wrenching performance in Tyrannosaur. She has been robbed – ROBBED – of a nomination!
What are your predictions and hopes for this year’s BAFTAs? Don’t forget to tune in on Sunday 12th February for the awards ceremony.
