Pete WiseSince 2005, promotions outfit Please Please You has been one of the core ingredients that makes York’s live music scene a good deal richer than those of most other cities of our size. Headed by widely-loved muso Joe Coates, PPY has brought a staggeringly broad array of the finest underground musical talent to a plethora of local venues, from (inter)nationally lauded acts like Frightened Rabbit, Lovvers, Three Trapped Tigers and Egyptian Hip Hop to hometown heroes Azuma Vega, Where’s Hollywood and Honeytone Cody, to name but the choicest few.
If you’ve found yourself slightly disappointed at the lack of music for music-lover’s being aired within the city walls of late, you can blame it pretty much solely on the fact that for the last year or so, PPY have been taking their foot off the gas as far as booking their own dedicated shows has been concerned. It’s with immense pleasure that I can tell you this won’t be the case very much longer, as Coates & co have just booked in a panoply of the most enticing shows to hit York for quite some time. These gigs are set to range in rather eclectic fashion from the left-field pop of The Smittens to the utterly intoxicating trippy folk of Smoke Fairies. Its just the start of the next chapter in Please Please You’s exciting history. It looks to be a chapter with the power to reaffirm even the most sceptical gig-goers faith in a live music industry which sometimes comes across as a little seedy.
