Bar Lane Studios is host to a pop up contemporary Youth Café and creative space between Friday 14 September and Friday 5 October 2012. York Youth Council have brokered a deal with Bar Studios for the next three weeks to host ‘Inspire’ youth café. Paid for by the York Young Peoples Trust in it’s entirety for the coming weeks, the café aims to make a success by providing services and space for young people which are currently under catered for in central York.
Members of York Youth Council have been working on the concept for three years. Having almost secured previous spaces, this is the first occasion that a venue has been found in Bar Lane Studios that support artists and aspiring talent in the city.
The partnership has allowed the young people to take full control of their vision from setting prices to, choosing workshops and attracting their audience which is no mean feat considering all are volunteers who are flexing their entrepreneurial muscles with this project.
Current York Youth Council members range from 11 – 17 and as young people are perfectly placed to provide a service to other young people. Following on from recent campaigns to raise awareness and improve support for young people on topics such as public transport travel prices and poverty in the city (an article on which is published in September’s issue of “One and Other”) means that this group of young people are more acutely aware and therefore best placed to provide what young people need.
By providing a safe, comfortable and easily accessible space, Inspire Café will serve as a café and creative space to host workshops targeted specifically at young people in York up to the age of 18. With the window decorated in words that describe the venue, Inspire is eye catching and set in an open space which can be owned by young people.
Workshops the youth council wish to provide in the future-
- Dance and Arts Workshops
- Music Events
- Design and Print a T-Shirt
- Help Make a Short Film
The youth-friendly prices for fair trade food and drink in the café will include; tea, coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits, sandwiches, juice, cup cakes and chocolate.
If the Pop Up Café project is successful, it’s future could be secured, so the organisers are asking for York’s help to encourage young people to visit the space until the end of September 2012 and prove that there is a need for such a space.
Promising a social welcome, Inspire Youth Café will be open 3:30pm – 9pm every week day and on Saturday until 5pm. Bar Lane Studios can be found at the top of Micklegate at the end near the Bar wall.
