To celebrate the end of the London 2012 Games and the success of Team Yorkshire’s  athletes – such as Jack Laugher and Joanne Jackson – children in York will be able to swim for free this summer.

Children under 16 will go free from Monday 13 August to Sunday 2 September on production of a YorkCard or Yozone Card at Yearsley and Energise pools.

Cllr Sonja Crisp, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “This is great news for children in York. The games have been an inspiration to many young people and now a new generation of Olympic hopefuls can swim for free for the remainder of the summer holidays.”

Funding for the swim sessions will be drawn from the delivery and innovation fund, launched as part of the council’s budget in February, and is one of a number of ways the council is working to promote sport in York. The city is also set to benefit from a new swimming pool, gym and sports facilities that will be opening soon in Heslington and is also, supported by the council.

Free entry is for open swim sessions only. Swim timetables for both pools are available here.
