In October, York’s Gallery Night Club went into administration after its owner was finally beaten by a long, difficult battle with (allegedly) £82,000,000 of debt. Dry your tears… as much as some would love to hear the words “Rest in Peace York Gallery”, the nightclub will continue trading in the hope of attracting a buyer.
The news arrived shortly after it was announced that The Gallery’s license was being reviewed due to an incredible increase in the amount of crime seen by the club. Between 1st of May, when The Gallery started their “May Madness” cheap drinks promotions, and 21st June, the crime rate had surged by a staggering 1,050%. I’m sure you’ve all heard the stories about a rather sinister gentleman hanging around at the back of the club, wearing surgical gloves and carrying a meat cleaver (we can’t confirm that the gloves weren’t all that he was wearing)? This isn’t the sort of fellow I’d like to socialise with of an evening, and I’m sure this isn’t the sort of behaviour The Gallery intended to attract, however many can’t help but make a link between these cheap drink deals and the clientele they are bringing to the club. I’m not intending to tar everyone with the same brush here, not everyone becomes uncontrollably violent and reaches for the nearest cleaver after one or two 80 pence VKs. I feel the need to comment on the irony of The Gallery being right in the middle of The Court and The York Dungeons just now… You really couldn’t make this stuff up.
I went to The Gallery almost religiously in my first years as a student, and I could probably count the violence I saw on one hand. I’d actually be interested to see the difference between the amount of crimes on a weekend to those in the week. Anyone who has been around York long enough, knows the city is a completely different place at the weekend.
The building that houses the Gallery is, actually, quite architecturally beautiful. I’m not a huge fan of the interior however, I’ve never had much of desire for purple carpets and Disco-Ball walls. Although it’s not something that can’t be rectified…We’d like to know your thoughts on this one, would you be sad to see The Gallery go? Or do you have an idea of something that could replace it?
