The University Of York has announced ambitious plans for the build of two new state-of-the-art complexes at Heslington East.
The first is a £9m sports village, which would feature a 25 metre swimming pool, Astroturf pitches, and a gym – all open to students and non-students to use. The new public pool is likely to receive a particularly warm welcome, as nearbouring options are limited to the member-only David Lloyd health and fitness club. The sports complex is due to open in Autumn 2012.
We have also heard rumours of an outdoor velodrome as part of the initiative, however this remains mere speculation at the moment.
The second complex is earmarked for environmental research, social sciences and archaeology.
Heslington East has already undergone a £200m transformation – the single largest investment made by any UK University – as it now houses the departments of Computer Science, Theatre, Film and Television and the York Law and Management Schools.
All this is on the doorstep of One&Other HQ. We are based in the Ron Cooke Hub – a new £21m building that brings start-ups and academics closer together to work on exciting initiatives.
See today’s Yorkshire Post for further comment from the University on this news.
