The wonderful In The Round season concludes with York Theatre Royal’s seasoned veteran Martin Barrasss as Stan Laurel and stand-up comedian Andre Vincent (who we had the pleasure of meeting last week - here) as Oliver Hardy in Tom McGraths two man production of Laurel & Hardy.

The duo are stuck in a waiting room after death and have to relive some of the highs and lows of their lives before they can pass through into the next world.

A visual feast ensues as we see both actors reliving their early days: Vaudeville years, various love affairs and their time with Hal Roach, the movie producer, whom they were frustratingly contracted to for many years, all inter-dispersed with classic moments of visual slapstick, musical numbers, dance and comedy routines from some of their many movies. This was accompanied valiantly throughout with live music from Christopher Madin.

Andre Vincent becomes Oliver Hardy; his mannerisms, voice and demeanour are meticulously observed. At seven -thirty on the dot he was checking his watch, tutting loudly and following latecomers to their seats, so be warned, get there in good time!

Martin Barrass seamlessly flits from on-screen whimpering Stan to serious business minded real life Stan.

We all grew up with Laurel & Hardy in one form or another and they are held in such great affection. Well done to Damien Cruden for bringing back Laurel & Hardy to the intimacy of the theatre.

Laurel & Hardy is showing at York Theatre Royal until November 5th.
