To celebrate national Potato week this last week we decided to pay homage to the faithful spud by scouring the city, eating an abnormal amount of fish and chips and letting our readers know our top 5 Fish and Chip shops.

1. Millers Fulford ( 77 Main Street, Fulford, York, YO10 4PN)

Millers have an amazing selection of uber fresh Fish. They offer some unusual variation to your standard cod or haddock also. On the first wednesday of every month they offer a Gluten Free menu.

2. Harpers of Wetwang  (15 Hull Road, City Centre, York, YO10 3JL)

Harpers opened last year and are fast growing a high reputation. The fish is beautiful and white and the oil is fresh. They also do nice prawns in batter if you fancy an alternative.

3. Ebor Fisheries (1 Ebor Street, York, YO23 1AX)

Ebor Fisheries has been open on the corner of Ebor Street and Bishopthorpe Road for over 100 years and you don’t get that kind of staying power without doing something right. With fresh fish every day, they do the basics right and long may they continue to serve great food with a friendly welcome.

4. Thompson’s (The Hazelbush, Malton Road, York, YO32 9TW)

Family run Thompson’s is a firm favourite with families. They are slightly out of town but good fun. Their fish is fresh and their chips are particularly tasty.

5.Wackers (45-49 Gillygate, York, YO31 7EA)

Wackers is great in terms of practicality. It is very central and does wonderful fish bites.

We also put the question to our readers which produced a slightly different list…

Readers top 5:

1. Drakes (Low Petergate)

2. The Wetherby Whaler (Nether Poppleton)

3. My Chippy (Swinegate)

4. Micklegate Fish and Chips

5. Fryway’s (Blosson Street).
