Being a student isn’t cheap, so when it comes to finding a decent watering hole the price of a drink is paramount. Here is the rundown of my top five cheap pubs.

1) The King’s Arms.

This is definitely one for beer lovers. The King’s Arms is a Samuel Smith pub located down by the river near The Lowther. Samuel Smith has been providing pubs with assorted products since 1758, and the brewery now operates 200 pubs within the Yorkshire region and always offers great value for money. Depending on what tickles your fancy, a pint of Taddy Larger won’t set you back any more than £2.00. With its first class location and outside seating it’s a great spot for lazy sunny afternoons.

2) The Keystones

Situated on Monkgate and no more than a two minute walk from YSJ, The Keystones is a Scream pub which means get your ‘Yellow Cards’ at the ready. The ‘Yellow Card’ is your pass to offers, and you can pick one up in the bar itself or click here. With a heated seating area outside looking at the city walls, jukebox and a pool table, The Keystones is the place of choice for many students in York.

3) The Lowther

The Lowther is not the place which you would want to go to in the afternoon, for me the pub is something for the evening, and normally my final drink before I head to The Gallery. The Lowther offers great spirit and mixer deals not to be snubbed. Triple vodka and mixer for just over three pounds? That is a bargain. You can find The Lowther on Cumberland Street (turn right down the road just before The Gallery).

4) Rumours

Rumours is on Micklegate and is a fantastic final stop before you go to either Mansion, Salvation or Tokyo. The pub offers trebles for singles on spirits and has a decent beer garden out the back. If you are planning on going to Rumours before a club it will be busy, although all the bar staff are great and you’ll be served before you know it.

Finally…

5) Dusk

Right in the heart of the city centre, Dusk is in a great location and has great prices to match. With two for one deals on cocktails during the week and bottles of beer for £1.80 (with a valid student ID), you will find the prices hard to complain about. My top tip here is to go for the cocktail option. For just £5.00 you’ll have two drinks, and be well on your way towards merriment.

That was my top five cheap places to drink. Of course York has so much to offer in terms of deals and promotions for students it’s very difficult to tell you about them all! If you have any suggestions on where to drink on a budget please feel free to let us know.

Yates. £4.99 for a bottle of wine. Can’t go wrong. Oh wait… maybe it can.
