A suspected unexploded World War II bomb has been found this afternoon in York.
The bomb has now been removed from the building site on Hull Road after being X-rayed and the army bomb disposal team and fire brigade have now left the scene. The roads have been reopened and workers are back on the site.
While working on a building development the situated between numbers 6 to 18 Hull Road, workers for Hall Construction have uncovered an unexploded bomb, causing the road to be closed and local residents warned to stay indoors.
The bomb, a cylindrical device, measuring around 2ft in length, was found despite the site previously being checked for bombs and other hazards. One worker on the site who had just started working on the development today told us that the bomb was ‘unearthed’ but not buried. North Yorkshire Police have just released the news that the device was a naval shell and has now been disposed of.
Around 25 workers were evacuated from the site, the nearby working man’s club was evacuated, and the site is next to the Shell Garage on the Hull road which was an obvious concern for emergency services on the scene.
Access to St Lawrence’s C Of E Primary School, which backs on to the site, was temporarily closed.
Around 350 flats for student accommodation are being built on the former dairy site.
Road closures were put in place at the junction of Green Dykes Lane and Melrosegate and Tang Hall Lane.

This happens more than you think. Two kids found one at a building site near my parents house. When taking it home they dropped it frequently, not knowing what it was. Scary stuff.
