YORK University student newspaper, Nouse are on the crest of media glory after being nominated for best newspaper at the 2012 Guardian Student Media Awards.

The news will delight editor, Martin Spurr and deputy editor, Rose Troup-Buchanan where hard work in the student media environment is arguably ideal preparation for the professional journalistic world.

Digital journalist, Jonathan Frost has also been nominated for best web editor.

Nouse previously came runners-up in 2005 and 2008. Their website also won the 2009 web page award.

In an ever-expanding competitive media environment, the newspaper in context will be pleased with their nomination.

Just like in the professional world, they have had to content with the traditional factor of a newspaper rival in the shape of York Vision who won the Guardian Student Media newspaper award last year. Vision’s absence from the nominations list will cause a shock after a series of dominance in the last decade.

However the editor and reporter of Vision, Oliver Todd has been nominated where has achieved success with nomination in the NUS awards.

From a former Nouse writer living in York: Guardian shortlist looks really odd this summer – think they mostly went for others over Vision due to trying to freshen up the shortlist a bit. Only Cherwell, of those nominated, is usually up for stuff. Nouse have had a great year though so deservedly nominated – would’ve been nice to see two York papers up though!
