The time of year is upon us to search once more for all of the ingredients (or some at least) that make York the city we know and love.
The Tourism Awards 2012 highlight the best places to visit, stay, eat and drink within the city: These can range from the best hotel to the best visitor attraction.
Visit York are constantly striving to make York a top tourist attraction and last week announced a campaign alongside visit Yorkshire to promote our city to as far afield as possible. These awards are a celebration of exactly this; the industry that is so important to our city. Tourism is suggested to bring approximately eight million visitors to York annually so the focus on the industry is no doubt crucial. This is shown with the relative economic success of York in the recent Cities Outlook 2012 report.
This year, the public are being asked to take part in an opinion poll and to vote for its favourite ‘Taste of York’ (here) or on their Facebook page or Twitter using #tasteofyork. Winners of the Visit York awards will have the chance to then go forward to the regional White Rose and national Enjoy England for Excellence Awards.
There are thirteen categories in the awards. These include: Hotel of the Year; Visitor Attraction of the Year (under 50,000 visitors); Visitor Attraction of the Year (50,000 visitors & over); Guest Accommodation of the Year; Self Catering/Caravan Park of the Year; Outstanding Customer Service Award; Business Tourism Award; Pub/Bar of the Year; Marketing Campaign of the Year; Employee of the Year; Taste of York Award and the highly prized title of Tourism Ambassador.
To highlight York’s important retail sector, which generates over £100million annual spend from visitors each year, a new award of Best Shopping Experience will also be hotly contested.
The winners will be announced on the 26th of April at a black tie ceremony at the National Railway Museum.
