Whatever your views on food there is no avoiding the love of different cuisines on the British high street. The popular Pan-Asian restaurant, Wagamama will be opening in York on December 12^th after signing a 20-year lease for the 3,900 sq ft unit on Goodramgate earlier this year. The unit has been empty since 2008 after JJB went into administration and it is encouraging to see that even in these trying times for businesses York is still able to fill empty spaces and create new jobs.

While many see the homogenisation of our shops and restaurants as a negative there will undeniably be employment benefits to the city. Initially up to 40 new jobs are being created to staff the store, this obviously helps employment within the city and as the Wagamama brand continues to expand both internationally and in the UK more jobs are being created elsewhere.

Jamie, a local resident said “It is great that Wagamamas  is coming to York and filling the empty space on Goodramgate that’s been there for so long”.

After starting in London in 1992, the chain’s ethos for good food has helped them receive to numerous awards and open over 100 restaurants with the employment family of 2,300 people.

The company philosophy is simple, ‘to combine fresh and nutrition food in an elegant yet simple setting with helpful, friendly service and value for money’ – combine this with the company’s dislikes of bad food and slow service and it is clear to see why Wagamama are such a popular high-street chain. With the chain serving over 12 tonnes of noodles each week, and with York and another restaurant to open in Manchester, I am sure that this figure will increase.
