As nights get darker and our cravings for mince pies become increasingly overpowering, it’s clear to see that we’ve once again reached ‘the most wonderful time of the year’!
Tonight York will begin its Christmas festivities, transforming the City Centre into a glorious Winter Wonderland. Celebrations will begin tonight at 5pm with the main event positioned on Parliament Street (just outside of M&S).
Cllr Sonja Crisp of City of York Council said of the soon to arrive festivities,“ York is one of the most Christmassy cities in the UK, so I’m really excited to see that this year’s planned festivities offer even more festive sights and sounds for visitors and residents to enjoy during the holiday season.”
Tonight also marks the beginning of York’s late night Christmas shopping scheme, which will continue weekly every Thursday right up until the big day. So there will be no excuse for last minute shopping!
Activities include Santa’s Grotto where children on the ‘Nice List’ can visit Father Christmas to make requests for this year’s Christmas Stockings.
However, for those of us too big to sit on Santa’s lap there’s a whole host of events to keep everyone entertained from Stilt-Walking Jack Frosts, Rodeo Reindeers and live music there’s bound to be something there for everyone, including a special surprise from St Nicholas himself!
Given the great honour of switching on the famous Christmas Lights are our very own York-grown musicians The Bogus Brothers, who at 8pm will be counting down 5, 4, 3, 2, 1! And lighting up the streets in preparation for what is bound to be a very, Merry Christmas.

I love the Christmas lights! Always get full of excitement when I see them and such is the buzz I get, I can almost tolerate the tourists... Although I accept that the lights aren't the Disney inspired ones we all hope to have, I think the council are damned if they do, damned if they don't. If they went all out then the NIMBY brigade would be out "my taxes pay for this when my bin only gets collected every fortnight..."
I'm not sure how the lights are funded but maybe if the businesses of York got together and put some funds aside for Christmas lights and then some sort of subsidy from the council to get some really fantastic displays. It would drive publicity, footfall and subsequent turnover and a boost to the local economy.
I think it's the same band but pretty sure Bogus Brothers are from Selby ;)
