York Company named in Sunday Times list

York construction company, The Shepherd Group has been named in the top three in the Sunday Times Grant Thornton Top Track 250 list.

The company is one of 18 Yorkshire businesses that have been named in the newspaper’s league table of Britain’s leading private companies.

It is the first time the Shepherd Group have been named in the list and the news follows an already successful year for the group. In May they received recognition winning North-West contractor of the year in May for the work produced on the city of Liverpool’s Central Library.

Owned by the Shepherd family and based on Fulford Road specializing on building, manufacturing and development, the list reported increased sales for the company of 15% to £607m in 2011 despite the continued difficulties in the construction market. Its modular Portakabins have also helped drive growth.

Despite the tough economic conditions, the company contributed to Yorkshire achieving combined sales of £5.4 billion and an employment 37,275 people in the region.

They were also other notable entries in the list from nearby which included Encon Insulation from Wetherby ranked 207th on the list and Leeds distribution firm, Clipper Logistics Group.
