A relative newcomer on York’s hostel scene has been voted the nation’s best in recent poll.
The Fort launched in 2010 as a boutique hostel and it quickly earned rave reviews amongst guests culminating in the No. 1 spot in HostelWorld’s rankings for July.
Nestled off the medieval Stonegate in the heart of York. Working with young design talent from around the UK, each room has been individually crafted to break free of the usual negatives that tarnish hostels. Inspired by the socially acceptable graffiti that paints Berlin’s streets, owner Karen Waugh decided to return to the UK with a similar approach to her new venture where examples of this urban artwork can be found scattered throughout the dorms and communal areas. Each room has its own theme and feel, from ‘Country Living’ to ‘UV’.
When asked what they thought set them apart, Karen told us: “It’s because we have a vibrant style and perfect location. Each unique room comes with high specs as standard including HD TVs and wet rooms as standard. And all this to be found slap bang in York little Latin Quarter, just a stones throw from all of the attractions York has to offer.”
