Henshelwoods Deli, overlooking the market, is a treasure trove of delicious goodies, and a step back in time to an age where informed, helpful service, and fresh produce sold to you in weight were commonplace.
Inside, shelves are brimming with jars of chutneys, jams, luxurious savoury biscuits, and decadent sweet treats. They source and stock a huge variety of the very best in both local, and continental products; from dried Italian pastas, to unusual and high-quality oils and vinegars, and organic herbs and spices. The huge glass-fronted deli counter is the shop’s centrepiece however; over 40 different British and continental cheeses from Wensleydale to Gruyere sit alongside fresh and delectable terrines, salamis, cured meats and pies. All of Henshelwoods own pâtés, tarts, and soups are made fresh by chef Kirk Vincent, formerly head chef at Antonio Carluccio’s Covent Garden restaurant, London.
Kirk’s food, and the atmosphere of the deli, combines the flavours and classic foods of Italy and the Mediterranean, with traditional British classics and a down-to-earth simplicity. Marinated olives, roll mop herrings, sundried tomatoes, Peppadew hot peppers, and any number of interesting and varied deli items are just waiting to be added to a salad, or experimented with as an addition to your dinner.
As well as making up fresh sandwiches for you at lunchtime during your working week, Henshelwoods also offer a wonderful picnic service, with a menu of picnics available to order ranging from the classic and simple, to the more decadent al-fresco dining packages, orders placed by 10AM are made up and ready to be collected for spontaneous outdoors adventures from 11:45AM. The Deli is open from Monday to Saturday, 9AM-5PM, and on Sundays over Christmas. Pop in and see what treasures you can find to inspire you.
