York Sport Village, the new £9 million sports and fitness facility featured in the current issue of One&Other [York] magazine will be open to the public on 14 August.
The state-of-the-art health and fitness complex will be a sporting asset for everyone in the city, inspiring us all to embrace active lifestyles and encouraging participation in sport at all ages and at entry level.
The keys were formally handed over to York Sport Village LLP on 26 July by main contractors Sir Robert McAlpine. Jon Greenwood, Director, said, “It is amazing and entirely relevant that our first day of formal ownership of this superb facility coincided with the day of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. I, together with my committed and talented team, will work tirelessly to ensure a sustainable and positive legacy long after the 2012 Games have finished”.
From 14 August York Sport Village will feature a competition-standard eight lane 25-metre pool, learner pool, 120 station fitness suite, three studios for dance, spin and aerobics, full size 3G astroturf pitch and three further five-a-side pitches plus sauna, steam rooms and a cafeteria.
The aim of York Sport Village is to continue to improve and add to our facilities and the development Phase 2 will start in 2013 featuring an outdoor 1KM road cycling circuit and Athletics Park.
For those that are interested in finding out more in advance of their opening on 14 August, York Sports Village will be holding open days on 4-5 August from 10am till 6pm and from 10-12 August between 11:00 and 20:00. The guided tours are every half hour and everyone is welcome. Virtual tours are also available at www.york-sport.com.
