“This is an experiment, you are part of it” 3 Sides Theatre

Giving the public a platform to express themselves, 3 Sides Theatre are a Community Based Theatre Company made up of artists Carys Cook, Sarah Kay and Chris Ward. Based in and operating on the streets of York, using a series of social experiments, the threesome aim to use performance and the media as a way of bringing communities together, creating a voice for those who have a story to tell.

The group have now been rewarded for their hard work and creativity by being asked to perform in London on Tower Bridge during the summer while the Olympics are taking place.

The Theatre Company, founded last October at York St John University, take its work onto the streets of York in order to create a feel good public environment with no hidden agendas. Their aim: to bring communities back together.

“We believe everyone has a story to tell, but don’t always have the opportunity to share it. Whether it’s using pen & paper, fabrics, postcards or just face to face conversation we hope to allow people of York to express themselves” The group told us.

Their work is cathartic with no gimmicks or underlying purpose other than to give back to the public. Having seen the power of the internet sensation (most recently the Kony 2012 campaign) the company uses simple strategies and ‘Acts of Kindness’ in order to engage with the public of York creating miniature movies capturing these small happenings which have included cleaning the streets of York and handing out free cake. One thing the company is keen to do is inspire others to continue to commit these small acts of selflessness.

“Three Sides Theatre is a theatre company focused on working with the public. We are currently collecting memories, confessions and other stories through creative and experimental methods.”

On top of the local success the company has achieved the trio has attracted national attention having been invited along to London’s 2012 Olympics this summer. Shortlisted to perform on Tower Bridge the company are currently working alongside indigogo.com in order to raise funds for the trip in where they will take to the streets of London to bring visitors from all over the world together.

“People have really opened up to us and seem to appreciate our presence in the city, we seem to brighten their day and help them to remember that they are unique and special!”
