We reported to you earlier in the year about plans for The Big Wheel in the city. Well now, the plans are finalised and the details are out.
York’s 175ft (53m) wheel makes its return in the next few weeks, promising picturesque views of the city during the cold winter months to come.
Great City Attractions Global (GCAG), which operates seven such wheels around the world and provided the last wheel five years ago, is shipping the wheel over from Dublin. Construction is to take place under the careful eye of John Lowery, the Operations Manager, in the grounds of the Royal York hotel, next to the railway station. The wheel promises to be a big hit with tourists and natives alike, taking 1.2 million visitors during its last tenure, and will surely become a must see attraction.
The company submitted plans to take derelict land behind York Art Gallery, and three other sites, but they were pulled at the last minute due to unforeseen risks over the welfare of bats.
The location of the wheel may not be in the centre of York, but will allow for great views of the both the Minster and the river. Just remember to bring a camera!
