Polemicist, gallerist, art hustler. Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it. According to McGee is a battle cry, a promise and declaration of intent: we run a contemporary gallery in the middle of a heritage city and it is our right and duty to champion the kind of art that sets our blood to smoke. Art is a calling: it demands an unquenchable zeal, and  - controversially for some – involves an elite derring do, where ability always battles self publicity, and beats it. To impart awe or engender joy, art no longer has to prioritise ideas over skill, concepts over rigour. A urinal? Blue tack on the wall? A light going on and off? Valid as conceptualism maybe, but not as art. “I could never do that” is a generous response and is all part of being in thrall to great art. Many disagree, and many have gone on to open their own art galleries to live out their opinion, but we’ve always stuck to our own vision: art makes life more interesting than art, so it better be damned good.
