Role at One&Other:

Anything and everything

Favourite time of year:

Autumn. For its crisp morning air; changing leaves; golden sunshine; game pies and the smell of bonfires.

Favourite travel destination:

Home, wherever that may be at the time. Home is somewhere where I will always be exploring, learning and travelling. Going away is incredible, returning home is spectacular

Secret hideout in York:

York Cemetery. Not in a desire to appear mysterious, sinister or bizarre, but because York Cemetery is the most beautiful place I have found in this city. A sanctuary of peace and magnificence with its ancient trees, bramble hedges, hidden corners, weather beaten stones and rich history. An afternoon here, with the autumn sun creeping down the meandering paths and through the rich foliage surpasses any other beauty.

Favourite things about living here:

The people

Best bars:

The Habit, Goodramgate. The most relaxed and welcoming atmosphere I have found in any bar in any city.

Best insiders tip:

Become an insider

Icon:

Leo Tolstoy – for his ability to capture humanity better than any other art or science.

Best view of the city:

Top floor of Marks&Spencers. Great view

Favourite shop:

M & K Butchers. There are not enough words to describe how amazing this place is.

Best place to eat:

El paradiso. Wonderful atmosphere with incredible authentic Italian food. Simply enchanting.

This time next year I will be:

…… less realistic about my aspirations.

Top 5 bands:

…I’m more a musicians girl than a band girl…but if we’re talking bands – Nick Cave & The Badseeds; The Handsome Family; The Velvet Underground; The National; Pavement

Favourite era:

Now. It holds the hopes and potential of the future.

If I was an animal I would be a:

….. a stuffed one.

I was born and raised on a self sufficient small-holding on the Kent/East-Sussex border by eccentric parents who ensured I was a taxidermist by the age of 8. Despite a passion for art, literature and music my infatuation with science and an ambition to receive the best education possible led me to begin my studies at the Hull York Medical School. Following two years of medicine in Hull I moved to York to undertake an intercalated BSc in anatomy, functional morphology and evolution – falling deeply in love with this area of research. Returning to the clinical years of my medical degree I remained living in York, while my training took me to towns and hospitals throughout Yorkshire. I am now continuing my academic research, reading for a PhD in Human Sciences at York University. This has allowed me not only to further explore my zeal for nature and science, but also to throw myself into the pulse of this city, with all its rich creativity and culture.
