Favourite time of year:
Autumn…..the colors are amazing and it also means it’s the start of the Northern swells (surf).
Favourite travel destination:
The list is long! Africa is next, an overland trip down the east side of the continent. It’s going to be amazing! I would also love to visit the jungles of Borneo; sweating buckets through the humidity and being swamped by mosquitoes, a dream holiday!
Secret hideout in York:
The Starbucks on Stonegate, it’s not much of a secret but it’s my hideout for when I just wanna kick back with a tall, skinny, vanilla latte (not picky…much) and the latest copy of Surf Girl!
Favourite things about living here:
The history of York is insane and is definitely one of the reasons I love living here. You can wonder certain streets during the day or night and feel like you’re on some sort of film set! The cobbles, the buildings that lean and overhang, the old lampposts; everywhere you look there is something practically preserved from a time gone by! The buskers in York are another reason why this is the place to live! They turn an average shopping day into a feast of sights and sounds. There is so much unrecognized talent around!
Best bars:
Dusk, Kennedy’s, 1331 and for music, The Stone Roses Bar.
Best insiders tip:
Don’t just stick to the main streets of York; some of the best restaurants and shops here are tucked away down the quirky little side streets! So lose yourself and go explore!
Icon:
Haha just answered this one with ‘Keira Knightley’, blabbered on about how much I love her and then realized that she’s an ‘Idol’ not an ‘Icon’. Oh dear. So I hit the delete button. Icon wise, in York, probably The Shambles. When you look up the street from the road it looks like something out of Hogsmede from Harry Potter and then look down it and the most haunted pub in York, ‘The Golden Fleece’ can be seen clearly! Truly awesome! I used to work a part time job in one of the tourist shops there, so got to know the place pretty well. I used to love closing up in the evening, when the street was practically deserted, the quiet was eerie but endearing; it’s a very special place.
Best view of the city:
Sorry but it’s going to have to Starbucks on Stonegate again (clearly spend too much time there). If you sit in the window and look to your right the gap between the two streets frames the view of the minster perfectly! The view is best in the winter, less crowds!
Favourite shop:
Shared Earth; it’s like an Aladdin’s cave of wonders with enough jewelry, ornaments and hippy clothes to sink a ship! And on the plus side, most of the stuff there is fair trade so you don’t feel so guilty treating yourself to a new pair of earrings every so often!
Best place to eat:
York Hog Roast is where it’s at! Day or night (till 2am on Saturdays) you can practically get a whole Sunday roast…..in a bun! Brilliant.
This time next year I will be:
Trying to sort visas and vaccinations for my African adventure!
Top 5 bands:
The Foo Fighters, The Decemberists, Mumford and Sons, The Script and The Buffalo Skinners.
Favourite era:
The 1940’s! I’m obsessed with everything from that era; the music, the fashion, the architecture and just the general way of life. I’m always badgering my Grandma about what it was like back then and I’m all ears when the oldies come into where I work and start a sentence with “Well in my time….”. It’s sad to think that at some point there won’t be a person alive on earth to be able to recollect those years. The 1940’s I believe, were the making of Britain, everyone pulled together and fought for their country in some way or another. I believe that the patriotism is lost now. And that’s a sad thing.
If I was an animal I would be a:
Bird; so I could fly to/away from a place or a feeling. It’s freedom, being able to go wherever you please. Humans don’t have that luxury.
