York LGBT Forum is now 10 years old, became a registered charity in 2015 and is currently one the Lord Mayor of York’s Charities of the year, but who or what are the York LGBT Forum? Lisa Kelly, Co-Chair to the forum is going to start a regular column here with us, telling readers all about the charity and helping to raise awareness all things LGBT.

Hello, I am Lisa, co-chair of the forum. We work with various organisations to raise awareness of issues around Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people in and around York, and we also strive to bring about less discrimination and greater equality too. We have several subgroups all working on projects, like ‘free to be me-in care homes’ which is aimed at raising awareness of LGBT people who are in care, most of whom grew up in an age when it was a criminal offence to be gay meaning a lot of older people retreat back into the closet in their latter years. We also have a schools group who are working with schools and ran a very successful LGBT writing competition earlier this year, which will be repeated again next year. Other subgroups include health & wellbeing, hate crime, international issues and transgender and other the next few weeks we will focus on each one in turn.

We also stage a few events each year, more so this year as part of the fundraising for the Lord Mayor’s charities, so we shall also be keeping you updated on when our events are, every event we organise are all inclusive, meaning we welcome anybody of any orientation. Our forum is made up entirely of volunteers from 18year olds through to people in their 70’s with a good mix of all orientations and genders and it is easy to get involved with the forum as a volunteer or as a committee member.

We hold open meetings every month, on the second Thursday of month, at York St. John university , De Grey building, room DG125 7pm to 9.30pm and the committee meets once per month also.

In our next column we will focus on the transgender subgroup and highlight our forthcoming events, but in the meantime if you would like to get involved with the Forum, please do get in touch with us at yorklgbtforum@gmail.com or check us out on Facebook below.
