I Don't Want Fop, I'm a Winston's Man

29th June 2016

Winstons

A lot of our dapper friends in York have often commented on the fact that there’s a slight lack of men’s independent boutiques in the city.

Of course, we have our classic attire shops like the fantastic Mullen & Mullen; our vintage shops like Dog & Bone Vintage and Bowler, but since Coggles disappeared into the digital world, there has been a gap in the market for a fashion-led shop that appeals to men: something which David Skaith noticed… and Winstons of York was born.

Winstons is a new independent men’s clothing retailer specialising in high-end, good quality togs. Stocking brands like Edwin and Farrah, they want to encourage people to their shop for a ‘unique shopping experience’ – which is exactly the concept behind David’s vision.

Creating an independent shopping destination like Winstons is what makes each city unique. Much like our own sister project Proudly, David recognises these boutiques as a driving force behind the city and wants people to not be discouraged, recognising the passion and drive that goes into such a place: he feels confident that York will share his vision:

“If every city you went to had the same high street, how boring would that be?” says David. “So much of shopping is geared towards woman’s boutiques and indies. I want to create the men’s boutique. Somewhere where they can feel pampered a bit.”

“The ethos is to create a destination, a place where people feel relaxed and happy to look in on and have a browse. If people like the look of the shop and feel comfortable in it then I couldn’t be happier. I want the shop to have character.”

David has certainly delivered just that: located on 28 Back Swinegate (in the old Paper Doll shop unit), Winstons have officially opened their doors. We suggest you pop in, have a look and share the news.
