As York’s independents continue to thrive, popular shop Dog & Bone Vintage is set to expand into the city centre. The unique shop has, through Barry Crux and Company, successfully secured a large space by the popular shopping destination The Coppergate Centre.
The new Castlegate unit, currently undergoing a major and exciting refurbishment - and working with agency One&Other Creative on branding - will offer a full vintage lifestyle, fashion and culture space to the centre of York. With an explosion of stylish vintage and retro clothing, mid-century and retro-inspired gifts & collectibles, the space will entice shoppers with its forward-thinking, fresh and modern approach towards vintage and retro, which everyone can enjoy.
Owner Nic Barker has enjoyed several years of successful trading on the city’s Gillygate, but the large central two-storey premises will allow the store to spread its wings and hugely expand its retail offering: “Dog & Bone is the kind of colourful, warm, inviting place that anyone can be drawn to and find something for themselves or another, and we’re hoping to make a real splash with the new store."
On the fashion side, Dog & Bone offers the full works. Selling classic pieces from the 30s to the 70s, retro wares from the 80s and 90s, classic brands from Adidas to Ralph Lauren alongside vintage and retro-inspired apparel, the store will cater for an eclectic range of tastes that will suit all budgets. Stocking a huge range of goods from the likes of fashion accessories, jewellery, lifestyle products to art, gifts and stationery, the new premises will cover a lot of bases.
The store is designed to be the kind of place you’d want to spend time as well as money.
“We’re excited to welcome a diverse mix of customers: old or young, obsessed or curious. Some will be nostalgic and some will be looking for a shopping experience and some good deals.”
“We’re going to keep things moving, and we’ll constantly be on the hunt for products which suit the aesthetics of the shop and that people will fall in love with," says Nic.
With the plan to hold regular events, the shop in York wants to encourage people from all walks of life to not only support the local economy but also get to know each other and form a fun sense of community. Coppergate and its nearest neighbours on Castlegate, have, in recent years, welcomed both major and independent businesses.
“You’ve got a fabulous range of retailers, cafes, bars and restaurants in the vicinity, all against the backdrop of Clifford’s Tower, the Castle Museum and a real sense of history – old and new sit very comfortably around here,” Nic says. Sitting by popular new wine bar Pairings, underneath acclaimed Rustique and opposite the glorious contemporary arts space of St. Mary’s and the popular Coppergate Centre, Nic is due to open the brand new Dog & Bone Vintage shop in April.
