Last Saturday saw what is considered to be the busiest shopping day of the year. The 7th of December, the first weekend of the festive month, saw shoppers flock to the streets to hunt for the perfect gifts. And this year our very own independent business campaign, Proudly, offered York something unique on this official Small Business Saturday.

To mark the occasion we, in partnership with Now and Then Group and the business support team for City of York Council, took over the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall for the day, to create the haven away from the bustling streets and premier Proudly’s Pop-Up Shopping Mall.

Over 30 independent small businesses brought their trade under one roof. Ranging from a microbrewery to a record shop, the established to the start-up, all of whom displayed their wares to shoppers in York keen to pick up something thoughtful and distinctive for Christmas. Armed with iZettle handsets, traders were able to take card-payments on the day. A bustling tearoom surrounded by independent food traders, a blow-dry and styling bar run by Bang Hair, Shadow Puppet shows for kids by theatre company Hoglets and a crochet taster session run by national name (and Yorkshire bred) Frank&Olive Crochet meant that there was something new to explore for all the family.

Whilst Small Business Saturday does focus on trade and sales it means much more than that. Supporting local businesses is an act we hope that everyone does their part in, all throughout the year. For Kate from Orillo Productions, a local film production company who’ve worked across the globe with names such as Jack Wills and Movember, the importance of the event went beyond what happened on the day:

Closing up come 3pm the clicker counted a total of 1,601 people coming through the door over the five hours of the event. Not bad, for York’s first Small Business Saturday.

All of us from team Proudly would like to say a big thank you to all the shoppers, traders, Now and Then Group, the City of York Council, iZettle and our venue Merchant Adventurers’ Hall.
