York Printmakers are having their launch exhibition at Blossom Street Gallery during October. Established last year, the group is for Printmakers living in the York area and has members working in a wide variety of methods including; Etching, Lino, Collagraph, Monotype, Screen print, Solar Plate, Japanese Woodblock and Lithography.
Meeting on a monthly basis, members share work and ideas in an informal way. So far they have participated in various activities including a residency at The Yorkshire Museum of Farming, a workshop on inking at Hawthorn Printmaker Supplies, and they have three further exhibitions planned.
Group member, Emma Whitelock, said, "The group was set up by Emily Harvey and initially comprised about a dozen of us, showing our prints and chatting about processes over a friendly drink. Now, our members have grown to over thirty and include people from a range of printmaking backgrounds from art students to professional artists who exhibit widely. It is a very relaxed forum for showing and discussing work and we have some really proactive members continually working on new opportunities for the group. Our logo, for example, was done as a group project with several of us choosing letters and producing prints of them in our own individual ways."
The launch exhibition aims to showcase the group’s array of skills, with some members using techniques and printing presses which date back hundreds of years, through to those pushing the boundaries of contemporary practise with laser cut plates, digital elements and 3D techniques.
Alanah Watson, from the group, adds, "It’s an exciting time for Printmaking and we want to show people the endless possibilities, as well as some of the plates which our prints derive from. There is so much work that goes into creating a plate before the printing process even begins."
Members from the group will be at the gallery each Saturday for a chance to ‘Meet the Artist’ and find out how their prints are made.
