Straight out of this year’s Edinburgh Fringe, actress Miriam Margolyes brings her Olivier Award-nominated production ‘Dickens’ Women’ to the stage of York Theatre Royal on September 4.
The actress, most famously known for her role as Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter Series, celebrates one of Britain’s most beloved writers in her critically acclaimed one woman show as part of a year-long world tour, which had included seasons at Sydney Opera House as well as New York’s legendary Morgan Library. Created as part of the DICKENS 2012 celebrations Margolyes portrays over 23 of the writer’s best-loved characters as she attempts to discover the man behind the quill, revealing everything from raucous humour of his characterisations to the darker, more sinister, aspects of his life and work.
Dickens who wrote fifteen novels and hundreds of short stories in his career is regarded as the ‘literary colossus’ of his age. His 1843 novella, A Christmas Carol, remains to this day one of the most influential works ever written continuing to inspire adaptations in every artistic genre.
In stunning demonstration of versatility and acting performance, Margolyes, together with her audience explores everything from the raucous humour of his characterisations to darker, more sinister, aspects of his life and work.
For one night only Margolyes will educate her audience on the intricate depth which Dickens’ brought to his characters, bringing to life an array of popular classics including doe-eyed young heroines to brow-beating old harridans, to men and midgets.
