A new temporary art gallery that will see high-end art work collide with friendly everyday spaces and prices is to open on High Petergate in York next month. Self-proclaimed as ‘York’s most individual art gallery space’, the Lotte Inch Gallery is to showcase and celebrate some of the greatest contemporary artist in the country in a unique, cosmopolitan, and comforting place.
Lotte Inch, daughter of York rare book specialist Janette Ray, is an experienced art curator whose pop gallery ‘The Minds Eye’ last year created ricochets of excitement and curiosity throughout the city. Yet now she is set to open the doors of her own gallery that will reflect her personal perception of the ideal environment in which to enjoy art and which is punctuated with her distinct flair that has been nuanced and developed through years of experience in the art world.
Lotte Inch said that the gallery will be “dedicated to supporting the work of local and national, distinguished and emerging artists. With a commitment to offering original, inspirational and affordable art to everyone. I want to remove the pretence which many people associate with commercial art galleries and to challenge the commonly miss-held belief that art is exclusive and to ensure that the gallery is the most welcoming place you are likely to set foot in in York.”
Created as a temporary space to house York’s swarm of art hounds, the Lotte Inch Gallery will feature three exciting exhibitions until the New Year, the first which will be ‘Taken for Granted: An exhibition of work by Gavin Turk and more…’ Here, young British artist Gavin Turk, whose work was collected by Charles Saatchi and who is most renowned for his controversial pop prints, is to exhibit works that examine the intrinsic beauty that lies in everyday objects.
Turk’s work will also sit alongside a portfolio of prints produced for the House of Fairy Tales, a child-centred artist-led project who create magical, parallel worlds blending play and learning, which will include prints from artists Peter Blake, Rachel Whiteread, Bob & Roberta Smith, Paula Rego and Simon English among others. In conjunction with this show, design-led products and gifts made and designed in the UK will be also available from the likes of Tatty Devine, York’s own Red Brick North, Ali Miller, The Rosie Lee Tea Company and Gillian Kyle.
‘Taken for Granted’, the gallery’s inaugural exhibition, will open its doors to the public on Wednesday 12th September until Thursday 18th October. Keep an eye on the Lotte Inch website here for more details to come soon.
