Proud war hero Othello secretively weds the beautiful daughter of a powerful merchant and unleashes a storm of prejudice and intrigue.  As he begins to doubt those closest to him, he turns increasingly to his trusted aide, Iago, for advice, with violent and tragic consequences.

Director Mark France returns to work with York Shakespeare Project for the first time since his critically acclaimed productions of the Henry VI plays (2007) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2006). This bold re-telling of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy is full of hard edges and simmering tensions with moments of profound beauty and tenderness. Soaring romantic love and visceral hatred sit side by side in a play that takes you from the searing heat of the Mediterranean sunlight to the darkest recesses of the mind.

York Shakespeare Project’s fast-paced production will seek to wrap you in its thrillingly claustrophobic embrace and never let go. Trust no one. “What you know . . . you know.”
